Rev. Cheryl Mitchell Gaines

Rev. Cheryl Mitchell Gaines is an ordained minister, attorney and Founder/Executive Director of Phoenix Rising Ministries, a ministry dedicated to the prevention of child sexual abuse by engaging the Black church leadership. As a legal advocate, she is committed to building bridges between the world of child welfare and the faith community. She has broad experience in child welfare, juvenile justice and faith- and community-based initiatives. Her former work includes: Chaplain with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, a faith community developer of program services, Director of the Youth and Family Project at the University of Rochester and Staff Consultant with the MayaTech® Corporation under the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) HIV Prevention and Substance Abuse Prevention in Minority Communities Initiative.

Rev. Gaines is graduate of Tulane Law School and a founding partner of Shekinah Legal Group, PLLC, www.shekinahlegalgroup.com a Washington, DC-based law firm. She also holds a Masters of Divinity Degree in Theology from Colgate Rochester Divinity School and currently serves on the ministerial staff of the Temple of Praise church www.thetempleofpraise.org of southeast D.C. under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Glen A. Staples
